Traxxas electronic speed controllers (ESC) have three different modes that control the output of the electric motor.
There are three modes:
- Sport mode
- Race mode
- Training mode
In this post, I will show you how to change the mode on a Traxxas ESC depending on what type of driving you are doing that day.
Traxxas ESC Mode Definitions
The first mode we will cover is sport mode and this mode is the default and is best for general driving. With sport mode, the truck can go forward and reverse and the throttle is set to 100%. That means there are no restrictions on the throttle and you go as fast as the truck is capable.
The second mode is race mode and this mode is for racing at the race track. Race mode is similar to sport mode, but the truck has NO REVERSE when in race mode. When racing, drivers are not allowed to go in reveres. If the truck get stuck or flips over, the track spotter must place it back on the track. Race mode also allows for 100% throttle.
The last mode is training mode. This mode is for beginners who are just learning how to drive a Traxxas Vehicle. Training mode reduces throttle and reverse speeds by 50%, helping new drivers get the hang of their vehicle before attempting to drive at higher speeds. So, if you have a friend that wants to drive your Traxxas RC car or truck, you may want to turn on training mode until they get the hang of the transmitter controls.
Recap of the Traxxas ESC modes:
- Sport mode is the default profile and offers 100% throttle, 100% brakes, and 100% reverse.
- Race mode offers 100% throttle and 100% brake but has no reverse.
- Training mode reduces the throttle by 50% and allows both forward and reverse.
How to Enabling Training Mode on A Traxxas ESC
To enable training mode on a Traxxas electronic speed control,
- Turn on the transmitter
- plug in the battery
- Press and hold down the EZ-set button
- Watch for the LED will turn solid green, then solid red, and then blink red
- The light will blink red one time, then blink red two times, then blink red three times
- Release the button
The Traxxas ESC is not in training mode after the light blinks red three times.
To disable training mode and return to sport mode, repeat the process above and release the button after the light blinks red one single time.
Switching Between Sport, Race, and Training Modes
To change the mode on a Traxxas ESC, you must first connect the battery and have the transmitter on. With the speed control off, press and hold the ez set button until you see a green LED followed by a red LED.
Once the light goes out, release the button and it will flash green or red depending on the mode you are in.
To select sport mode, continue to hold the button down until you see the red LED flash once.
To select race mode, continue to hold the button down until you see the red LED flash twice.
To select training mode, continue to hold the button down until you see the red LED flash three times.
When and How to Use the Different ESC Modes
The mode you select for your ESC will depend on your driving skill level and the type of track or terrain you are driving on.
If you are a beginner RC driver, it is best to start in training mode so that you can get used to the feel of your car or truck before moving up to sport or race mode.
If you are an experienced RC driver, you can leave the vehicle in sport mode. I think sport mode is could be called bashing mode! Race mode is only for the race track where reveres is no allowed.
If you are trying to teach your kids how to drive a Traxxas RC car, I highly recommend putting the car in training mode. Brushless Traxxas vehicles are still very fast in training mode where the throttle is set to 50% power.
How To Change The Mode On A Traxxas ESC Conclusion
To change the mode on a Traxxas ESC, all you need to do is hold down the EZ set button and remember that one blink is for sport mode, two blinks is for race mode, and three blinks puts the vehicle in training mode. I hope this post has helped you to understand how to change the mode on a Traxxas ESC. A simple change like this can make a big difference in your driving experience. Don’t be afraid to experiment between the different settings. And make sure to check to see if you need to put your Traxxas vehicle into race mode at your local track when racing. Happy driving!
