The Traxxas TRX4 Blazer is a 1/10 scale version of General Motors 1979 K5 Blazer. The Traxxas Blazer is built on the TRX-4 chassis and is outfitted with many replica parts. It looks exactly like the iconic K5 Blazer!
The Blazer is great out of the box, but you can find many Traxxas TRX4 Blazer upgrades that will help your rig crawl over the toughest terrain. In this post, we will look at the TRX4 Blazer and look for upgrade parts that will bring this vehicle to the next level.

In this article, we cover each product in detail. But, here are the quick links for the products covered below:
- Traxxas Velineon VXL-3S ESC and Motor combo
- Traxxas 2255 Brushless Servo
- Traxxas 2250 Coreless Servo

- Traxxas 8038 Light Kit
The Stock Traxxas TRX4 Blazer
Before we get into the upgrade parts, lets review the stock TRX4 Blazer components.
Chassis
The Blazer comes equipped with strong steel frame rails, adjustable wheelbase, aluminum scale shocks, and a dual battery tray.
The oil filled GTS shocks were designed specifically for the TRX4 blazer to help the truck conquer the toughest crawling courses and off-road terrain. I love that the shocks are adjustable so you can raise or lower the entire rig. Most other brands do not have the ability to adjust the ride height. Nice one Traxxas.
Drive Line
Traxxas added T-Lock remote locking differentials, a high and low gear transmission, sealed ball bearings, and a twin friction plate slipper clutch.
Remote locking differentials is probably my favorite feature on the TRX4 blazer. You can lock and unlock the front and rear differentials from your transmitter! You don’t need to completely stop driving to manually make adjustments. Just hit the diff lock button on your transmitter to help traverse through obstacles.
Electronics
The TRX4 Blazer comes with the XL-5 HV ESC and Titan 21T 55o brushed motor.
Waterproofing is a must when crawling through mud and wet conditions. The Blazer comes with the waterproof 2075X metal gear steering servo.
The front an rear differentials are actuated with waterproof micro servos. So, all servos on this rig are waterproof out of the box.
Finally, this truck comes with the TQi 4 channel transmitter. With the transmitter you can:
- lock and unlock the differentials
- switch between low and high gear
- set cruise control
- control the throttle
- control the steering servo
Best Traxxas TRX4 Blazer Upgrades
Although the Blazer is a great RC crawler out of the box, everybody loved to upgrade their rig! Lets look at parts you should upgrade if you want to get the most out of your TRX4 blazer.
TRX4 Blazer Brushless Motor Upgrade
Upgrading to a brushed 3S system will give your Blazer a huge power boost. This is a must have add on if you are planning on driving your Blazer in mud.
The Velineon VXL-3S ESC and Motor combo is our pick to upgrade your rig to a brushless system, and if you buy this upgrade, you won’t be disappointed.
The VXL-3S is the same motor and ESC that goes into all Traxxas VXL models like the Slash and Rustler.
It is a very powerful motor that will run longer and cooler than the stock brushed motor.
You will need 3S batteries to get the most power out of the motor, but you can run 2S batteries too.
TRX4 Blazer High Torque Servo Upgrade
Although the stock servo is very good, Traxxas makes two awesome upgraded servos.
The two servos we recommend are:
High Torque servos are made to improve the steering response. You will notice the servo responds MUCH faster to steering inputs from the transmitter compared to the stock steering servo.
The difference between the 2255 red servo and the ss50 blue servo is the torque.
The 2255 brushless servo outputs 400 ounces per inch @ 6.0 volts
The 2250 coreless servo outputs 330 ounces per inch @ 6.0 volts.
Traxxas TRX4 Blazer Upgrades : Crawling Tires
If you plan on crawling your Blazer, I like to have a tire with larger tread that is spaces out a bit more. Tires are really important for crawling because the extra bite can help overcome steep or rugged obstacles.
For trail crawling, I like the HOBBYSOUL Mud Terrain Tires.
These tires are soft crawler tires that are excellent for grass, mud, rock, and loose terrain.
They measure 121mm/4.75in tall and 44mm/1.75in wide and come pre-mounted on aluminum 1.9 bead lock wheels.
Traxxas TRX4 Blazer Upgrades : Lights and Light Kits
Your Blazer won’t be complete without the Traxxas 8038 Light Kit. A light kit is a fun upgrade that is easy to install. You don’t have to worry about taking apart the motor, gear boxes, or shocks. It is a nice way to make your truck look awesome without spending a ton of time breaking the truck down.
Conclusion For Traxxas TRX4 Blazer Upgrades
I think tinkering with my RC crawlers is a fun and a stress reliever. My favorite thing to do is install new parts, especially performance parts! Whether you are looking for more power, better traction, or lights, or any other mod, the Traxxas TRX4 is a great rig for drivers that like to install upgrades.
