When I first saw the Traxxas XRT I said to myself “WOW this is a big Truggy!” But what scale is the Traxxas XRT?
The XRT is a 1/5 scale 8S truggy.
1/5 scale means that it is 1/5th the size of an actual monster truck. The XRT sits low to the ground and has a wide stance thanks to the WideMaxx suspension setup.

How Big Is the Traxxas XRT?
The Traxxas XRT is a 1/5 scale RC truck and I think it is one of the largest vehicles on the market. As far as dimensions go, the Traxxas XRT has a width of 23.43 inches (595mm), a full-droop height of 12.12 inches (308mm), and is 31.41 inches (798mm) in total length. The total length includes the rear wing.
The Wheel base on the Traxxas XRT is massive, coming in at 18.9 inches (480mm).
The front and rear shock length is identical at 6.79 inches (173mm).
Finally, the wheels on this beast are also gigantic. Each wheel has dimensions of 4.3 x 5.7 inches (110mm x 147mm)
You will notice the XRT sits lower to the ground than other trucks in it’s class. That’s because Traxxas built this truck on a low center of gravity racing chassis.

What Size Battery Fits The Traxxas XRT?
The XRT requires not 1 but 2 4S batteries. When you combine two 4S batteries, the truck is running at a full 8S. Traxxas recommends running battery part number #2890X. This is a 6700 milliamp hour battery that has a 25C discharge rating. Two 4S batteries will provide a nominal voltage of 29.6 volts and the ESC can handle a max of 33.6 volts of electricity.
What Motor Is In The Traxxas XRT?
The Traxxas XRT is powered by a Velineon 1200XL electric motor. This is a 1275 kv sensorless brushless motor. This motor is a large one and weight 23.44 ounces. It uses standard Traxxas 6.5mm bullet connectors to connect to the ESC. This ESC and motor combo will push the XRT to extreme speeds.
What comes in the Traxxas XRT Box?
The XRT comes with the following components in the box:
- 1 XRT ready-to-race model
- Traxxas Big Block motor (velineon 1200XL)
- Velinon VXL-8s electronic speed controller (it’s waterproof!)
- TQi 2.4GHz radio transmitter
- Maintenance toolkit
- High Speed spur and pinion gears (for max speed runs!)
To get the truck rolling, you will need to purchase the following components separately:
- two 4-cell 6700 mAh Lipo batteries (Traxxas parts #2980X or #2997)
- LiPo balance charger
- Four AA alkaline batteries for the transmitter
How Expensive Is The Traxxas XRT?
The Traxxas XRT comes packed with many incredible features, but that means it comes with some high price tag.
Traxxas has listed the XRT at $999.95 at the time this article was written.
You also need to purchase two LiPo batteries and a charger to get the truck running. So all in, you can expect to spend about $1500 dollars for the truck, charger, and LiPos. But, if you’re an RC maniac like me, its worth every penny!
How Does The XRT Compare To The X-MAXX?
The X-Maxx is a monster truck and the most notable difference is the height of the X-Maxx compared to the XRT. The XRT is a monster truggy. It sits lower to the ground and has a lower center of gravity. The XRT also wider, which gives it greater stability than the X-Maxx.
The XRT has shorter shocks compated to the X-Maxx. So, I think the X-Maxx will be able to tackle larger rocks and logs because of its higher ground clearance.
According to Traxxas, the XRT can reach speed of 60+ miles per hour while the X-Maxx has a listed speed of 50+ miles per hour. So, the XRT should be a bit faster than the X-Maxx if you install the optional high speed pinion and spur gears.
Finally, the XRT and X-Maxx both are 1/5 scale vehicles. They also both use Traxxas’ modular chassis design which provides easy access of the critical components when doing repairs.
